Successfully upgraded desktop PC using toolkit from microsoft. But when i doing the same for laptop, after choosing upgrade, one of the pages that comes up state that my windows not activated and asked to key in product key. No skip button anywhere. I did not even reach the keep personal file and settings pages.

Desktop didnt prompt or come to this page, no issue at all. Checked the laptop and confirm its activated under system page. Both the desktop and laptop are using windows 8.1 that is purchased at offer price during launch.

Using toolkit downloaded to respective machine. Both Windows 8.1 pro 64bits and select upgrade straight instead of creating media disk.

Anyone have any idea why desktop no problem while laptop state windows not activated(Its already activated) and asking for product keys which i guess is windows 10 keys?

You might want to check that your laptop OS has been fully updated prior to doing the upgrade.

If you need the Win 10 keys, I have posted them earlier in this thread. Edit: Don't use these keys if your Win 8 is not OEM.

But if I use the keys it still won't activate Windows 10 after installation right? I bought the digital copy of Windows 8 during the offer of about $18 during the launch of Windows 8 few years back. Is it retail or oem?

No, the activation is done when Win 8 is upgraded. During the upgrading, your laptop's specs are sent to and recorded in Microsoft's servers. This is what will allow you to reinstall in future. The product key is not really that important.

I've no idea whether your Win 8 is OEM or retail. You can check from the command prompt- type "slmgr /dlv".

Would like to know the key from the Windows 8 Upgrade promo is retail or oem too.

Ok tried slmgr /dlv, mine seems to be retail.

If so what happens if I try to do a fresh installation of windows 10 after the 1 year free upgrade promo is over? If lets say I change specs with gpu or processor upgrade etc. Will I not be able to install win10 then because the specs is different from the one in Microsoft server?

Assuming that your Win 8 is OEM and you upgrade within the one year period, your copy of Win 10 will be tied to one device. It is not known how Microsoft determines whether you are doing a fresh installation to a new device. Change in MB is a new device. Change in GPU alone is not. If it is anything other than a change in MB, I suppose Microsoft will look at the extent of the change in hardware.

The download is corrupted.

Delete everything inside C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Restart your PC and use the media creation tool to download again.

Thanks! Downloading now! But to a USB drive first.

So I upgrade to 10 Pro first. Then do a clean install right?

Try updating again?

Doesn't work. I go check Update Page. Nothing there to download even after restarting PC.
