So I got to this screen. Before I proceed, just to check, will it ask me which drive to install the OS?

I have 1 SSD and 3 HDDs in the PC.

It will ask you which device/partition to install in. However, unless you have already upgraded to Win 10 and are now doing a reinstall, this is not going to work.

Edit: you would end up with a trial (non-activated) version.

Before anyone gets too excited and imagined I have hacked their PCs, if you upgrade from an OEM version, you will get the same product key depending on which version of Win 10 you upgrade to.

All my 3 Win 10 Pros have VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T as the product key.

You will get a unique product key only if you upgrade from a retail version.

I had upgraded retail win 8.1 pro to win 10 pro using the media creation tool, also has the same product key.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this. From some of the web discussions, it would seem that if you transfer the license in future to a new device, you would have to install win 8.1 Pro first and upgrade again. This of course raises the question of upgrades after the first year.

I suppose you would have to ask MS support.

It is another one of those things that MS has not really clarified.

I've tried belarc and produkey and both displayed generic keys. However the vbs script shows a different key which i believe to be the true product key. Have not tried using that key though.
Anyway I believe ms intend to make things easy for upgraders by eliminating the need to key cdkey for win10.

Hmm there is a 30 day windows for reverting back to previous os. I read somewhere which states that the previous os cdkey will be rendered invalid once the window has closed. If that's the case, the previous os may not be reinstalled to another device even if it's a retail license?

Win10 is Win8.1 with DX12 support, Win7 integration (to win over Win7 users), Cortana support to fight off Siri and Google, and seamless transition between devices. In fact Win10 is wad Win8 hoped to be but could not be, and wad Win7 needed to be updated to be.

Those currently running windows 10 pro, can help me confirm there is an option available to disable automatic windows update?

I am not referring to disabling via services.msc, kb hotfixes, registry hacks.

Another one of those things which is not clear. This would make sense if a unique Win 10 product key is issued for retail Win 7/8 upgrading to Win 10 but this does not seem to be the case for everyone.

There are some views that retail Win 7/8 upgrading to Win 10 will get the same non-transferable Win 10 license as OEM upgrades i.e. tied to one device and non-transferable. This does not really make sense to me as I can imagine the outrage from retail OS owners.

There is a paucity of detailed information from Microsoft on how the licensing for upgrades is supposed to work. A lot of stuff on the net is based on user feedback and guesswork.

I suppose that those with retail licenses should clarify with MS support (if they know) and share the information here.

There is an option to defer upgrades. 4th post for this thread. If you are referring to permanently disabling auto updates, I think you will need a tool/hack for that.
