5GbE and beyond ethernet adapters

Maybe power related issue.

I have two Comfast/Fenvi brand USB 3 to WiFi 7 adpters (both using Type A and not Type C) and some times it will also drop when carrying out SpeedTest.

Interestingly it is better if I use the USB extension dock from Comfast.

On the same Acer laptop (Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPU), no issues when I use the USB4 /TB4 port with my two USB 4 to 10G Network Adapters from IOcrest/GRiS, probably the USB4 /TB4 port can delivery more power.

I tested with a Dell 7060 which has a usb-c 3.1 10gbps port as well as my desktop B450I with USB A to C adapter as my PC doesnt have a usb-c port .

Check your event viewer, if there's any errors related to the wavlink. If it's working fine on your macbook then perhaps there's some issue with windows. Both my PCs are running windows 11. Desktop is running 22h2 and laptop is running 23h2.

WL-NWU340G Rev. A. For your issue, have you tried it with any other windows laptop etc? What do you mean by instability? For me, after system bootup, it takes about 1-2 seconds to initialise and then i am connected to LAN.

Not sure if it'll help but i'm running 13900k/ MSI Z790i Edge desktop, as well as 7840HS Lenovo Slim 7 laptop. Both works fine.

Whoah that's cool. Recently due to the broadband upgrade, I've gained more of an interest in networking. I'll probably be looking at getting a minipc to be my router, perhaps the MS01, and get started from there.

Reporting back on my wavlink 5gbps adapter testing(both on Mac):
(1) Seems more stable on my M2 laptop vs my intel iMac. Sometimes on intel iMac, after you switch ports, it refuses to detect it until you restart computer
(2) On vq 10gbps plan, I am getting 4.7gbps max down and up
(3) Performance is dependent on your rig specs. I am getting 4.7gbps on M2 Mac vs 4.4gbps max on an intel iMac on TB3

Sharing a good SFP 10gbE adapter. Found something that has only 1.35W output. Haven't tested on full load but this runs pretty cool on my UDM-PRO at only 40 degrees. Able to achieve 10gbE link on a 30m CAT6A cable. EDIT: meant to say my PCIe PC adapter is using AQC113 chipset.

IOcrest version is well reviewed. I have also tested IOcrest one and it works fine.

If the computer is slower, USB to 2.5Gbe adpter (say from Ugreen) may perform better than the WaveLink USB to 5Gbe adapter when connected to 2.5Gbe port.

The following results are from our old Acer Swift 3 laptop late 2017 model with Intel Core i5-8250U CPU, 8GB RAM/256GB configuration, upgraded to Intel AX200 WiFi 6 adapter (just retired this year because of broken speaker and plastic stand falling off).

I believe the Type C port is only rated 5Gbps (USB 3.1/3.2 Gen 1).

1) Ugreen USB 3.0 Type A to 2.5G Adapter: pretty stable speed.

2) WaveLink USB 3 Type C to 5Gbe adapeter: download speed not that stable when connected to 2.5Gbe port of my Hasivo 2.5G/10G switch.

3) Speed when connected to 10G RJ45 port of the Hasivo switch.

That is normal. If you are worried, add a fan. It is common to use fans to cool down 10G stuff.

I am not actively using the X520 dual SFP+ 10G network interface card constantly for my Ryzen 5 5600G desktop, so I do not use a fan. I only install the SFP+ optic module and connect it to a Hasivo 8-port 10G SFP+ switch through Fibre cable when necessary (basically only for testing using iperf3 and Ookla SpeedTest).

For my mini PC (dual SFP+ ports and dual 2.5G ports) which acts as the main router for my home network (running 24x7), I use a 12cm USB fan to cool down the two SFP+ ports. One SFP+ port has SFP+ 10G RJ45 module installed (quite hot). The other SFP+ port has 10G SFP+ Optic module installed (also pretty hot).

I also have an 8 cm USB fan to cool down the two 10G ports of my other Hasivo 2.5G/10G switch (also running 24x7) which has one 10G RJ45 port, one 10G SFP+ port and quad 2.5G ports. The 10G RJ45 port is usualy not active (basically only for testing using iperf3 and Ookla SpeedTest). The 10G SFP+ port is connected to the 8-port Hasivo SFP+ switch using Fibre cable (somehow DAC cables do not work well between the two Hasivo switches) and it is always active.

XikeStor/SeekSwan mentions that this is a new product. Please refer to their official preview video (including tear-down). They also mention that the chipset (AQC107) is hot and they have to add a small fan. They also tested the noise level to be about 54 decibels (dB) .

Side topic --> very few consumer PCs (desktop, mini PCs and laptops, Windows or macOS) will have 10G NIC built-in. Even for Desktops, you may or may not have spare PCI-E x 4 slot to install a 10G NIC.

Mac Mini is an exception. The latest Mac Mini M4 2024 version seems to be a good one to get --> with the optional S$150 upgrade for built-in 10G NIC. It also has 16GB RAM for the base version and nice form factor.

The only thing missing is WiFi 7 support --> I guess that I will wait for next generation Mac Mini to have WiFi 7. My Mac Mini M1 2020 model is still working fine and no issues with 10G using my two USB4/TB4/TB3 to 10G NICs (one from IOcrest and one from GRiS).

For those who do not care about WiFi 7, the base model at S$849 + S$150 = S$999 for a 10G capable Mini PC seems to be a very good deal. It does support WiFi 6E.

Usually I have no issues since these kind of adapters are not always connected, at least for my use cases (anything 5Gbe/10Gbe are only for speed related testing).

I actually have six USB fans running now in my "home lab central" to cool down three Intel N100 CPU based Mini PCs and three network switches (Hasivo 8-port SFP+, Hasivo 2.5G/10G switch, TP-Link 8-port 2.5G switch). I cannot hear any noise at 3m away.

Any difference between going for intel-i225V, intel i225LM, intel i226V, realtek RTL8125BG? All are more or less the same price, lower latency is a priority for gaming.
